REVIEW

January 12, 2007

This is the next to last in the series of recent Space Cruiser Yamato "Eternal Edition" soundtrack CDs. Some of these are sold as two-disc sets (like this one), and others are single discs. Even when sold as two-disc sets, each disc is numbered separately. This set contains what are known as Eternal Edition Files #8 and #9. This time around the selection centers around BGM tracks used in the original 1983 theatrical release version of the movie (including plenty of previously unpublished takes) and remastered to bring back the great orchestra sound as close to the original as possible.

File #8 (COCX-31160) has some really good action pieces that benefit from a big orchestra. There are also some good sounding marches and slower pieces. Overall a pleasant disc to listen to as stand alone music. I enjoyed both discs in this set as standalone pieces.

File #9 (COCX-31161). The first track on this CD started off like something you might hear in an Akira Kurosawa film like "Ran" and then transformed into a lovely fantasy type theme of varying tempo. Track 2 is a slow haunting tune with female backing chorus.

From the Starblazers.com website at http://www.starblazers.com/html.php?page_id=73:
This is the last double-CD package in the Series, and it's as complete as any Final Yamato music collection needs to be. Of all the different parts in the Yamato saga, Final Yamato got more album coverage than any other film, including an image album that predated the release of the movie itself. Not all of that material ended up on this CD, but unless you’re a diehard completist, this set should keep you satisfied until the appearance of some future compendium. Disc two in this set includes some solo-piano versions of classic Yamato themes.
