REVIEW

May 30, 2001

New series, new composer. Taro is considered to be the most light-hearted Ultra series (read childish) and at times it is with giggling monsters and bizarre plots. One episode has a girl subduing a monster by singing a pop song to him with no visible band! Ah, the magic of TV. Currently available in a poorly dubbed video CD format from Asia, Taro is an odd production. It’s design is very 70’s, the Earth defense force has the most ghastly costumes and vehicle designs of any Ultra garrison and the monster designs don’t even rub against the word scary. Higure matches all these visuals with an extremely lighthearted, often pompous score that is actually a fun listen, but a far cry from those serious motifs composed for Ultraseven. The music for Taro’s birth and the Ultra home, the Land of Light, uses a female chorus and reminds one of the starship theme created for Battlestar Galactica. Remarkably, much of this score is in stereo. As entertaining as it is weird. Oh, and that Hammond Organ version of the main theme!
